    ******'s comeback from the setback

Wow sorry to see that. I cruise thru that area all the time. A friend of mine lost his shop in the Santa Cruz area this year too. Being that you're in LA County, I doubt building & safety will let you rebuild with the existing foundation. New codes are ridiculous.

    New IR Compressor

60 amp breaker with 10 ga wire is fine for a 5 hp motor as long as you have a disconnect switch with 30 amp fuses within view of the compressor. It should have come with recommended electrical connections.

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Wow. Thanks for the details. I have CATIA to model the parts. The info you provided is plenty for me to draw up the details. Of course after I finish other projects. I'll share what I come up with (may be a while though).

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Thanks for that info. I've heard about the Yost pipe jaws before and almost bought them, but held off because I'm not sure how they would fit and they're different than the original. I do have a friend with a machine shop and want to eventually make some original style jaws. The Yost jaws are a...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

I do have the vise here to measure and see that a Reed 32 uses bigger jaws than a 31. What I'm not sure about is the geometry of the the vee where the teeth are, how far the thicker jaw in the dynamic jaw protrudes into the other two and how tight it should fit into the slots. My plan was to...

Do you happen to have a drawing for Reed 32 pipe jaws you'd be willing to share?

    The VISES of Garage Journal

That is the original wing nut. The swivel base, prior to 1917, was attached to the bench with 4 screws in the center. 1917 and onward, they added tabs to bolt the swivel base down. The blue vise pictured is a Reed 32 from about 1910.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Sorry for late reply. Was out of town. I used JB Weld (1/3 epoxy, 1/3 hardener, 1/3 or more metal chips). The mix was very stiff. Looking at an angle it looks like the sides. Straight on, you can see the metal flakes. I think it'll hold up good as long as it's greased regularly and kept clean...

Thanks and I'm about 100 miles away. Quietest, smoothest earthquake roller I've ever felt. Lost about 3 inches of water in the pool.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The only other "repair" I did was insert a .025 thick arbor shim behind the collar to eliminate some of the backlash in the handle. I couldn't quite get the pin behind the nut tight enough to get all the play out, but it doesn't move much. Pictures below of the finished vise. Anybody out there...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The vise was in good shape, except for the crack at the tail of the slide. I posted pictures a couple of weeks ago of that repair. It went as follows: Degreased, derusted (electrolysis), drilled/counterbored/ tapped and inserted cap screws from the side. Then I ground out the crack, and applied...
