It is not a rotary screw, in fact it is a scroll unit. They are alot different than a screw. They have a small housing with a bunch of fingerlike ends that make contact with the inside of a housing and when rotated compress the air. I have installed a few of these commercially (powerx) units...

I would check the tank check valve,if it is carboned up or burnt out you can have issues with too much head pressure. give it a look see.
