This exact thing happened to the property I bought last year.
Garage trusses are designed 2' on center and previous sowner just went ahead and cut the lower chord of one to make a nice 4' wide stairway up to attic.

Just got around to re-installing the halogen lights in the garage first bay. Looks way better then the job the PO did with driwall screws holding up the light cords to the ceiling.

Over the summer cleaned up the under house garage and now I'm out of ideas as to how to cover up the oil tank in a way to allow access not block it off. Any suggestions on how to go about it would be appreciated.
