I’d recommend a knee mill if you have the space. I have that Enco mill. Mine looks to be less used and came with 3 & 4 jaw chucks, two types of steady rests, and some tooling for $1200 about 15 years ago.

Good suggestion. I have 2x2 steel on hand and quality clamps and jack stands. Wouldn’t have a problem with tacking the 2x2 to the underside of the frame rails for extra stability.

I have a 1/2 inch steel plate 4' x 6' on an old steel desk with two sets of drawers similar to your drawing. The desk is too low for most work. Also the drawers are collecting shavings and the slides are rusting. I had the desk when I got the plate, so on it went until I could build a frame.
