Yes, I also thought that at some point the stubby may have been modified. The only odd part is the stamped N in CAN is actually on the machined down part.
As for why I have some made in Canada, I'm actually in Canada. But up until I got these tools from my uncle I had no idea snap...

Now this is quite the find. I inherited this beautiful set of taps and dies from my uncle. Patience and Nicholson, made in Australia. 1/4" up to 1" UNC and UNF. I cant find a year of manufacturing anywhere unfortunately, would love to know the age.
