    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thank you FMC, that's all I needed, a little motivation. I went to see it earlier today and you were right, once I saw it I had to take it home. I had never seen a "real" 6 inch vise before I saw this one today. Overall it looks pretty good. Not quite as clean as the pictures in the ad made it...

So this thing just came up for sale near where I am. I'll probably never see one again up here, looks to be in pretty good shape. Guy wants $245 Canadian dollars, what do you guys think? If I had the money to blow on another vise I don't need I'd already have bought it but times is tough. Maybe...

Looks just like my workbench about ten minutes after I tidy up, every time.

An hour or two with a decent file and you could get them good and flat using a draw file technique and some patience. You'd need to take your time and check every now and then until you get things good and flush. Edit: Depending on how hard the jaws are, of course. I'd be willing to bet that...

It really wouldn't be so bad if it didn't look like the entire thing was dipped in a big vat of paint. You need some contrast between the painted parts and the bare metal parts.

He doesn't need to bring them back, he just needs to stash them somewhere and retrieve them when he gets back to the future. Agreed.

I found this ad today for a Ridgid vise http://www.kijiji.ca/v-hand-tool/ottawa/rigid-vice/1274285219?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true . I kindly informed the gentleman that they do indeed still make them like that, in Germany, and that a brand new one could be had for less than what he is asking...

They are made by Irwin and are supposed to be hardened tool steel, but a quick google search on that place turned up a bunch of horrible reviews for bad customer service so I don't know how I feel about giving them my business. I'm not too sure how hard these things are supposed to be anyway...

I managed to get the screws out of the jaws on the Record No 6 this morning. I tried the clamp a bit and turn with a wrench trick but they just wouldn't budge so I took it all apart for easier access to the screws. The broken screw on the top left turned out to be the easiest, there was a little...

Take it off the swivel base and have a look underneath. You might find a stamp that may or may not be (I'm nor really positive, but it would seem to make sense with my Records, at least) the last 2 digits of the year it was made. My no 6 has a 63.

G-ManBart Is it just the lighting or does the paint on the swivel base look totally different than the rest of the vise?

Ya, that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping that they wouldn't be some weird, rare type of screw. Unfortunately it looks like they're too far gone for saving. Oh well, I'll figure it out. I'm in no big rush to get her on the bench (to be honest it's probably too big for my bench, the No3 is...

The speed out looks like it would work well and would definitely come in handy. For $10 you can't go wrong, will order one. I had thought about drilling the heads off but was worried about wrecking the inserts, but now that you mention it I realize a Chinese HSS drill bit probably won't even...

Thanks Dutch. I figured it would be easier to straighten the handle if i removed one of the knobs to free it from the leadscrew but I guess I'll just work around it. The knobs haven't moved at all over the decades so getting one off would probably be a big pain in the neck. Now I just have to...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I picked up this Record no6 today. It's in pretty good shape, just a few marks in the jaw area, nobody hammered on the slide. It still has a lot of the original blue paint underneath a thick flaking coat of gray. Still good and tight. The handle is bent a little. $40. Any ideas on the...
