What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Sliding door in my shop was secured by a pad lock on the exterior; kind of inconvenient. Now its secured by this: Threaded rod goes goes through the wall into a t-nut secured in the door framing. The big wing nut ***** the door tight to the wall increasing the effectiveness of the...

Dammit. Craigslist needs a spell checker!

For me texting is free; voice costs 50 cents a minute.

The ole 2x4 vs 2x6 construction question..

2x6 walls also give way more room to run utilities in the wall. Your electrician can easily set your wiring back 2" with plenty of room to spare (vs. the 1 1/4" set back you get with a 2x4 wall).

    Schlage keypad locks..

Both my shop and the house have keypad deadbolts with exterior passage handles. Works great. My shop lock has 5 number buttons (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-0) and takes a 6 digit code. I just selected a code (you can change them at any time with a minutes work) that uses all five pads so they all...

    Blown in insulation DIY

If you are in a heating climate you need a vapour barrier. The better the continuous seal the better. So boots around electrical boxes (or vapour boxes). Acoustical sealant on all joints. Seal all penetrations with the acoustical seal. Use the acoustical seal to seal the plastic to the edge of...

    What would you do different.

I've already got super insulated double stud walls; 2" foam under radiant in floor heat; ICF foundation; 6x7 wash room where the whole room is a tiled shower room; 8X10 sliding insulated door; switched circuits every four feet in the ceiling to plug shop lights into; sink and dishwasher; MWBC...

    Blown in insulation DIY

Before you rent the machine phone around to insulators for an installed price. When I did my shop I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could get it installed for only $30 more than it would cost me for the insulation from the building supply borg. That was $30 very well spent.

    Finish for wood truck bed?

White Oak also has the advantage that it doesn't get splintery as it weathers.

Is there a fire rated material that is lighter weight than sheetrock?

What's your attic space configured like? One option would be to install a fireproof hatch over the stairs that is lifted after one starts up the stairs. Or you could enclose the space surrounding the stairwell in the attic and install a fireproof door at the top of the stairs.

Show us your compressor plumbing and manifolds

This is my partially completed system cobbled together from leftover bits I had hanging around. Air comes into the manifold via the coupler on the T on the left hand vertical. The plan is for a ring loop around my shop off the stub at the top left of the zig zag. The half dozen drops around...

What are/(were) your most USELESS tools?

Weirdly 18mm isn't included in most mid range wrench sets and I've had to buy several because that is a fairly common size on Dodges. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't a low bar anti tamper thing. Dodge Engineer: I know how we can discourage the home mechanic from futzing with this ABS...

Compressed air lines - should they be grounded?

This is also a Canadian Code requirement (10-406). The risk is pretty real; people drape electrical cords on air piping all the time. Yep, that too inside and out. While you maybe could rely on an incedental bond we usually bolt a servit post (basically a split bolt with an integral mounting...
