I located the mystery vise from last weekend's flea market, and couldn't resist paying $75 for it.
It weighs just over 60.5 pounds. Jaws are 4-7/8" wide. Maximum opening is 6-5/8".
There's only about 1/16" of backlash, and the slide is a snug fit.

A friend spotted a large unmarked vise at a flea market. He said it was heavy and looked well made.

I like your idea of using grommets to keep the handle from fouling the drawer. T-nuts were a good idea as well. (y)

Info on VintageMachinery.org indicates that it would later be re-branded by Champion as model 555 and Craftsman as 9-5202...

Any ideas how old it might be? All the pics of 203 1/2 models I see have the above-the-bench...
