I'm adding a 20x22 to existing garage with 16x17 second floor.

The only thing that changes is amperage. The benefit would be smaller gauge wire = more $$$ for toys 1000w at 120v requires 1000/120 = 8 amps. 1000w at 240v requires 1000/240 = 4 amps.
