    The VISES of Garage Journal

I see your 23 has the printing on the side. Mine is on the top behind the swivel jaw with the sides being blank. The printing suffered a lot more abuse in that location. Does that make mine older or newer? My base has only 3 ears for bolting it down.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

My Prentiss No 23 Got this vise off of E bay last week. It was described as a possible railroad vise and had poor pictures, I got it for the starting bid of $50. Had to drive 50 miles up to Larimie, WY to retrieve it. The back of the slide has an 8 inch long crack in it. I clamped it...

That stand looks like it was the base for an old cream separator. One of my anvils sits on a very similar stand. Mine has a board bolted to it so it doesn't swivel and puts it at just the right height.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Picked up a Wagon tongue vise for $25. The spring between the jaws is broken but the rest of it is in very nice shape. I had never heard of a wagon tongue vise but I found pics on here. The jaw shape is very close to a Columbian post vise that I have. Jaw width 3 7/8" Appears to be designed...

Rock Island 851 vise taper pin size?

Thanks for the drawing. Stainless makes sense too. I'll have to look through my metal stash to see what I have. I also like the idea of the hole in it or flats for a wrench to make it easier to break free.

Rock Island 851 vise taper pin size?

Now that sounds like a good idea. I can do that. I'll have to get some dimensions for the pins on the other vise makes. I'm using 5/8" rod for the Rock Islands.

Sounds good. Made it up to Estes a couple times this summer to pick up some tools from the refrigeration company that is closing down.

Rock Island 851 vise taper pin size?

OK, I uploaded some pics to my album and inserted the link. Hopefully they'll show. I'm in Livermore, CO, about 30 miles north of Mr. Scott as the crow flies, it's a bit more by car. I made a few extras since it's easy once the tool is set up. The two on the vise are made of spring steel...

Rock Island 851 vise taper pin size?

I just picked up a Rock Island 851 off of craigslist. It's in pretty good shape but the previous owner just whittled the swivel jaw pin out of a piece of 1/2 rod. I have a tool and cutter grinder so I made my own. I had to vary the angle until I got a good fit. It turns out to be a 5 degree...
