Yes you are right there is not much room to work with. As far as I can tell the e clip or equivalent and a washer is standard on some vises. There may be room for one more washer but getting the clip on after that would be a real exercise in patience (in other words not for me). Can you give...

Thanks. I am working with the same vise as the OP. This thread was very helpful in me fixing it. Unlike the OP, my retaining washer popped itself out somehow, so I have installed an E-clip. There is a lot of pressure backing out of a full close on the vise, which has popped the E clip out...
