Gfci's are pretty temperamental by desighn. It only takes 4-6 mili amps to trip a perfectly functioning gfi receptacle. It sounds like you do have a minor problem somewhere along the line. It would probably be fine to do what you have and wait for futher evidence of it being defective. Obviously...
