I did this a few years ago on a fireplace piece. I used Henry Feather Finish and was very happy with the results. I built a wood frame, covered it with cement backer board and trowled the finish over the top. I can post more pictures of the process if you want. Luke

Not sure what finish you are going for, but I have used spray on bedliner on a few sets of wheels with excellent results. I like the black rugged look; really depends on what end look you are going for.
