Actually I just remember I took a couple of (bad) pictures of another door at a house we were working on to try and get an idea of how it works. Problem is mine is missing pieces and I can't locate them.
There was a keyed latch that goes into that recess.
The interior picture didn't come out great, I'll get another one when I get back.
It's not visible in the picture but there is hole in the metal track to the left of the shot that accepts the latch.
