    42x68 'Iron Horse' Garage/Workshop Build

When my wife recently harassed me for spending about $100 to revamp my 36 x 30 N gauge platform with my son, I merely pointed to this thread and said "see - it could be worse. Significantly worse." Love it! Kev

    Questions on Finishing Reclaimed Wood

I've also heard suggestions on "color washing" the wood with brown paint watered 1:1 and then Shellac over it. Anyone tried that approach?

    Questions on Finishing Reclaimed Wood

I'm currently putting together a mantle for my fireplace. I have some reclaimed (true) 2 x 10 wood scaffolding used by a local outfit of brick layers (ESCO bricklayers). It's about 125 years old and has kind of an ingrained concrete dust in it. I'm using this to build a 4 x 88 inch mantle for my...

    Air Compressor HELP

The motor sounds like poop when it spins around - kind of clunky - and there's a lot of resistance when turning. The pump spins nice and free with the belt off. The compressor would work on and off before the motor finally quit turning on at all. For awhile I could let the compressor sit for a...

    Air Compressor HELP

Well, the bearings in my air compressor electric motor appear to have died. The motor is going immediately to overload protection/blown breaker. After fiddling around with the pressure switch, pressure relief valve, etc, I've narrowed it down to the motor. This was a used Craigslist special - 60...

Any great ideas for painting Exterior plywood?

Starting this Garage build with all 10 fingers...

Look on http://vintagemachinery.org/ A lot of times you can find the unmolested stickers on that site and either print them on decal paper (cheap) or have someone make you it in vinyl (a little more). That's how I did it on my 12" C-man bandsaw.

    Cheap Garage Lighting Solution

Are they all T12's though? I liked the fact that these are new and won't be obsolete in a year - I don't see the normal screw in light bulb socket going away even in the next several generations of technology. Kev

    Cheap Garage Lighting Solution

That's kind of what I was thinking - the big bulbs are expensive. If I hit one with a 2 x 4 or it burns out, it's a pain in the **** to source and $$$. If I whack a 23 watt CFL, I pick up another bulb while I'm grocery shopping for a couple bucks. Kev

    Cheap Garage Lighting Solution

Actually, I just double checked the price. It's $6.58/6 pack, so $2.19 in bulbs per fixture. Total cost is $7.41/fixture. You of course need more BX wire and connectors/conduit and wire or just wire, but there is some economies of scale involved and most shops like my 32 x 24 won't require more...

    Cheap Garage Lighting Solution

I've looked through Veno's thread and saw his successful use of the big 400 watt equivalent CFL's with reflectors- they're usually in the 3,800 lumen range. These average out to about $18-$20 a fixture when shopping around. I have a 9.5 ft ceiling instead of the much taller ceilings the big...

The Non-Denominational Church of Hot Rodding

Well, it's been awhile, but I'm back at it in the upper shop. I tore down my Nova into a million pieces and put floor pans and a trunk pan in. Por-15'ed everything and put some fancy suspension/brake parts on. I got it back to rolling again because it was time for some GARAGE UPGRADES. So, I...

    Compressor Issue

I replaced the pressure switch because I had a spare NIB one sitting in my garage and wanted to see if it would work. Very scientific :willy_nil Kev

    Compressor Issue

Here is a link to the Porter Cable diagrams (compressor diagram is under "exploded art, detail #2). http://servicenet.portercable.com/Products/Detail?productNumber=C7510 Am I looking for part # 17 - VALVE CHECK 1/2NPT? I looked through the user manual and it said: I replaced the pressure...
