VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

I'm having trouble finding jaw screws for my Rock Island 574. Normally I could see just going with a modern screw and doing new jaws, but I'm trying to keep the original brass jaws. These screws are tapered, and when I took them out, a number of the heads were stripped. I thought I might be...

That was my thinking, Never having done it on a vise before, I wanted to see if it was a viable solution. Thanks

Good point. I meant an anvil in the sense of pounding on it, not in the formal blacksmith anvil sense. I don't have anything I'd trust to pound on now. My last piece of steel/iron for that purpose was at my father's place. Now, my best bet would be an abandon railroad track, or to buy something.

Here are some Rock Island 574 shots. It's in pretty good shape. I'm just getting it apart and cleaning it. I need to find a good anvil to straighten the rotation clamp handle, it's bent (no photo). It has some minor issues: Damage from a loose set screw The company badge has some paint...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

I'm getting there with the pics. As you may have surmised, I'm not that handy with the phone camera. That damage was likely caused by a loose set screw. I just got the Rock Island apart. It's in pretty good shape. Brass jaws. I need jaw screws, or I may MIG in the old Phillips head and saw...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

I'm finally getting around to taking my Rock Island 574 apart and I came across this on the screw. I realize the damage is relatively small, but what do folks do to make this "better"?

Perfect! Especially since I have a lot of it laying around from my knife handle work. I'll give it a try.

The Unofficial Vise Parts Swap Thread.

I have a broken Columbian 605 1/2. It's perfect except the slide is in bad shape. If anyone has a dynamic jaw to sell, or would like to reverse things and buy my static jaw, let me know. I don't want this great vise to die.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

How often do folks like to leave vises at bare metal? If so, what do folks use to protect them. A friend recommended LPS 3, but there are a lot of other ways to protect them at metal.

What's the best solution for removed pins (which hold the nut)? Do folks try to reinstall the old one, or fashion a new one? I saw a video of a fellow making one from a screw, but he tapped the base to make it stay in place. I'd prefer to try to match the old pin.

    A silly grease question

Well, I couldn't wait anymore, so I sealed back up my grinder with some Stay-Plex red grease I had laying around. I don't think it's the best option, but it was free (I had it already) and will work well enough for now. As I said before, I have no grease expertise, so if I've done something...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

Getting there. I've been focused on finishing the 605.5. When it rains it pours - I looked for an old vise for months, and nothing. Then the 605.5, and 506. Now a Rock Island is 574 is available. I don't really need it, but... This can be an expensive hobby. I keep trying to convince my...

    A silly grease question

I just bought three old Metabo Angle Grinders on eBay. They've seen heavy use, but are basically OK. I wanted to clean them up a bit and repack the gears with grease. The Metabo grease is crazy expensive, like $160/lbs. Its a clearish synthetic grease. I don't know enough about different...

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix

That's a fair point. I paid a lot of a Columbian 506 a few days ago in great shape, before I knew if I could get the 605.5 apart. I realize it's a long shot, but if anyone knows of a 605.5 owner with damage to the stationary jaw or other parts, let me know. It seems a shame to let such a rare...
