I stand them up on their head on a level shelf, with the handle pointing straight up. Not all hammers will do this, especially certain claw hammers.

I agree with the supply/demand thing; I've paid $75 for a 1967 Lincoln manual, and $3 for a '98 Neon book. Some are just harder to come by.
