LVL or 2x12s 12' garage door header

I'd like to add that if you are working alone the LVL is going to be very heavy. You can build the header in place with 2x lumber so handling it will be much easier.

Garage looks too big, so my boss says. Any design ideas appreciated.

The overhang that a couple of other guys posted will change the appearance quite a bit, also windows. If you don't want to spend the money on the materials for the overhang or even more for windows, just consider a different pattern or material for the siding above the doors.

What are your thoughts on options for leveling first course of siding?

My father just gave me a laser level that his wife bought for him a few years ago. I don't recall the brand or know what it cost. He never used it & I'm not even sure why his wife got it for him. Anyway, out of curiosity I set it up in my basement to test it out to make sure it worked. It...

You can extend a tape measure to the eave, mark the walls in several locations with the same measurement, then check the marks with the water level.

What are your thoughts on options for leveling first course of siding?

Years ago I worked for a siding company for a couple of years & we used a "water level" to get the started on the entire building. No electronics, nothing bent or damaged, just a vinyl tube & water. https://www.wikihow.com/Use-a-Water-Level

    New Mailbox

That looks great, nice work. (y) I'd love to do something nice but being the last house on a dead end makes my mailbox a target for plow trucks, delivery trucks, taxi cabs & random imbeciles who should be walking & not be behind the wheel. I have fixed mine at least a dozen times over the...

For those that ask "how deep do a build my garage?"

That's a nice truck, I'd move or lose the cabinets to keep it inside of the garage if this was my situation. I have an older Dodge Ram, a 2004 Quad Cab with the 8' bed. I might be wrong but I believe it may be the same length as your Mega Cab with the short bed. I can fit mine inside a 24' deep...

Birds keep flying into my garage and getting stuck! Any device to keep them from not coming in?

Not much you can do other than keeping the door shut. I have had them get into my garage many times & the biggest pain in the neck is that they sometimes fly up through the opening to the second floor. If I know they are inside I have to go upstairs, open the windows, remove the screens & kind...

Show me your 24x36x12 pole barns

Technically my building is not 24'x 36"x 12' but close. I had to stagger the rear wall to be able to squeeze the building between my septic system & an angled property line. My original intent was a 3 bay for parking 2 vehicles on one side with a work area for one on the other. I added 2 lifts &...

Saggy rafters! How much weight can a 4x6x16' piece of lumber hold mid-span? Will (3) 2x6's screwed together be stronger than one 4x6?

It isn't nonsense, it simply depends on the application, the lumber grade & the method used to double them up with adhesives & fasteners. The 4"x 6" lumber is harder to get unless it's pressure treated. When I do see it, it's always more expensive & usually has splits & cracks running through it...

    Driveway Asphalt

Whatever you choose for asphalt thickness, whether it's one or two layers, the most important things is what's under it. The 8" of stone sounds good, most will skimp on the stone & do as little as 4" but it all depends on the soil conditions. Is the new driveway being installed where an...

Solutions for high lift, minimum clearance doors?

Found a couple of photos I had showing the tracks & the 8' high doors in relation to the ceiling & I-Beams in the garage. The bottom of the two steel I-Beams are approximately 4 to 5 inches above the doors & tracks. If I remember correctly the bottom of the steel is 11'-9" from the floor.

Solutions for high lift, minimum clearance doors?

For an overhead door you may still need room between the ceiling & the face of the garage door when it's in the up/open position. Light fixtures, garage door opener, ceiling fan, etc., can all interfere with the door. I'm not sure if the horizontal height of a high lift track can vary other than...

    deck repair

To avoid taking the railing apart & possibly breaking something, I'd do that corner in 2 separate pieces & screw them together. Whatever you decide to do, definitely predrill the wood.
