What brackets to replace these rusty ones with? (Attached porch)

Simpson makes some REALLY strong L Brackets. Take a look at their catalog. Use screws or through bolt them on BOTH sides of the beam and the support, done. It lasted how many years without extra support ? Add another fifty with the L brackets. Mike B

Old Fastener Storage: Do you indulge or refrain?

Guess I am the fastener "grinch". After YEARS of saving hardware I finally realized that for ME it was far easier to get the exact size I needed for a particular project. No more cleaning old dirty fasteners, no more using "almost" the right length.... but getting what I need all shiny and...

    Question on Mounting Electric Hoist

OP is probably long done with this project, but here is another take. This hoist is positioned over a bay one floor down, so I can use it as an engine hoist OR a way to move things up into storage. I used the 880 pound Hoist from HF, it has been a work horse. I always use it in double cable...

    Alignment machine

OK here is my two cents....Yes you can do a quality alignment at home, with basic tools and gauges... IF you have patience, knowledge, and motivation... BUT since most of us lack at least one of those- here is what I would recommend to most folks here. I have sold alignment equipment for over...

Can gasoline be used as paint thinner?

Let me add a fun story.... I finished up at college in 1968. I couldn't find any bone spurs so I got a paid vacation to the jungle . When I returned in late 1969 I ended up purchasing a body shop at the ripe old age of 23. I had worked for the owner all through HS and college. He was in his...

    How to Paint Bolts

"Are you sure they are bolts, I mean actual bolts.... Most wheels that are for the street have what look like bolts but they are actually press in bolt-looking things." I was given a set of wheels that had chrome "allen head bolts" all around the rim... They turned out to be plastic chrome...

    $1000 Budget… Woodworking from Scrap…

I couldn't build much without a table saw. A quick glance at Craigs List in Hawaii showed ten table saws of various quality at reasonable prices. Circular saw and a straight edge for breaking down sheets of plywood and then off to the table saw. Couple of saw horses and a router (maybe build or...

4'X4' Folding Heavy Duty Work Table Ideas?

I used to have three of those Lifetime tables.... two larger ones and one of the smaller size....worked GREAT for trade shows and doubled as work tables back in the shop. I STILL have two..... "SOMEONE" ripped some concrete backer board on one of the larger tables and forgot to put spacers...

    Expanding cellar window

It is definitely NOT a block wall. Sad to say but some of my decision is being driven by age - not wise decision making lol. My 75 year old self would rather work on the autocross car... Mike B

    Expanding cellar window

Thanks for the ideas... I called a concrete cutter today for an estimate....I really don't want to deal with the rebar...and of course the other side is not accessible so I will let the pro do it. Mike B

    Expanding cellar window

Hey all Had a plumbing emergency a weekend ago and I finally was able to snake it and problem gone. I am lucky to have a dry huge hobby/ shop/storage full cellar with a poured foundation. In 1997 when I moved to this house I was able to fit through that cellar window and plumb the laundry...

    Folding Saw Horse

Hello all I bought these saw horses in 1990... 5/4 BRONCO PORTA-FOLD WORK FORCE These were made in Somerset Pa. They are yellow pine with nickel plated folding and tension hardware and I recall having to go pick a pair up because they wouldn't ship.I know I paid a hundred bucks for them in...

    DR Power Wagon

If the drive system holds up under a brushcutter I guess it should be fine for the cart. I use my winter Wheel Horse to move the wood to the pile. The DR will be for getting it up on the deck. Time to break out the summer Horse and put this one away. Mike B

    DR Power Wagon

Anyone have one of these ? I was looking for an old snowblower to make a firewood carrier from the woodpile to the deck... this popped up on CL and I picked it up for 300.00....seemed easier than building my own. I won't be working it that hard, just replacing the hand firewood movers...
