How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Thanks, I used commercial grade receptacles, and the build quality on those feels a lot better than the cheapest ones, for hardly any more cost.

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

With the vertical installation and 24" OC framing, it's what the drywall supply house suggested. Probably a bit more durability and sound insulation properties are side benefits too.

Yeah Vancouver Carpenter has a great channel and seems highly regarded by drywallers.

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Here's a couple pics 70' trench, hand dug because I wanted a nice smooth arc for easier wire pulling and couldn't really use a trencher closer to the house. Four gang switch box with 12GA wire is kind of a pain but it worked out We did 5/8" sheetrock, installed vertically so there's no...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

OP here, I have updates as promised earlier. This thread kind of died when my reddit link was posted, not sure why, but I see it's had some posts since then. Several weeks ago I mentioned acquiring the permit from the city. Since then, with a little help from the journeyman electrician I...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Thanks for the reply, sorry if that was worded poorly. If using the 50A quad breaker option (as suggested by the 2nd electrician I met with) then #10 is sufficient. If using the tap option as suggested earlier in the thread, then #8 for the ground is required. I picked up wire this morning...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Applied for and received my permit this morning. I wasn't really specific on the plans regarding the means of getting the power into the conduit, but they didn't question it. Shopping for wire now, and just realized Platt sells by the foot to homeowners, and the pricing is as low as the best...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Bert, can you clarify something about the ground wire size? I've been planning to use 10 awg, but if I were to tap off the 100A, I would need to step up to a 8 awg, right? I think the ground wire would have to be sized based on the 100A feeder and not the 50A or 60A subpanel at the shed if I...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Yes, I've put together some pictures of three differing approaches and posted them on a subreddit. FWIW I've received much info from the posts here at Garage Journal, and much prefer this format, but Reddit is a different set of eyes and I've learned some things there as well.

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Bert, thanks for the code reference and for letting me know about the Polaris tap option. Thanks for the replies, I can see why it'd be useful to be able to independently cut power to the shed without taking the house off power. In our case over 20 years of living here I can't remember more...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

It's 70' plus some up/down the walls so maybe 80' of wire run. Have not purchased wire yet, I've heard it's best to do that last! I was planning on either 6awg or 8 awg copper for the three conducting wires and 10 awg copper for the ground. Should probably just go for 6 awg as that will allow...

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Thanks for the reply. It's quite possible I misunderstood him and he may have said to do it only IF the equipment supports it. And it may be an unnecessary expense anyway as Bert pointed out too.

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Thanks Bert. Something like this, then small subpanel at the shed? With neutral and ground separated / unbonded at the subpanel?

How to get power from main breaker / AC breaker to shed?

Unfortunately I cannot find any information on the panel door that definitively states the service size. It looks like long ago there was a sticker that has since eroded away leaving only some adhesive residue and dust. We've owned the house 20 years and I'm speculating that the panel dates...
