I was in the market for a new Gen2 US general tool chest but found this Gen1 44" top and bottom for $500 on Offer Up. I much prefer it since it matches up with my current 44" gen 1.

I am pretty OCD about stuff and I am trying to imagine this scenario of having 4" of a chest sticking out. 4" is quite a bit and very noticeable.

This is a good idea. I have not thought about this. However I am still SOL for the upper chest because the Gen2s will not fit without sticking out 4".
