well, it seems there were some burrs (??) maybe on the taper. I tried the above recommendations, and nothing seemed conclusive. So I finally tried some 1000 grit wet sanding while rotating the assembly from the pulley. I did one light pass for 30 seconds, cleaned well and did another heaver...
