Wrap the pipe with athletic tape - like trainers use to wrap ankles & wrists. Gives you a nice grip. Once it gets dirty from use just remove and re-wrap.

Exterior paint every time. Gloss is easier to keep clean. I don’t care if small imperfections in the surface are visible. For me it is all about reflecting as much light as possible.
