    Pallet racking

Pallet racks make great benches. My main bench is 10' long. I was able to put 3 standard width tool cabinets 2 standard width 2 drawer file cabinets below it.

    Material for Workbench Top

My main bench is based on a pallet rack with 2"x10" lumber on top and then covered by a sheet of 1/8" steel. It has a 4" back splash up at the back and a 4" lip down at the front.

    a waste of a garage

From a municipal planning perspective, garages are used for parking calculations. For many of us it doesn't matter one way or another but in subdivisions it's a big issue. Local by-laws differ but for arguments sake if a lot requires 3 spots typically it would be 1 in the garage and 2 in the...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT A new lease on life: 30x40 schoolhouse conversion

LOL. It could be today! I'm expecting some galvanized sheet metal they ordered in for my powder coating oven build. I'm glad they're open again. For a while they could only sell to "essential" business users and I'm hardly one of those.

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT A new lease on life: 30x40 schoolhouse conversion

Nice job all round. I have a good friend who lives in Hensall who might be close to you. I checked in on him last week just to make sure he didn't freeze up on the walk between his house and garage. Things get pretty chilly and windy there at this time of year. If you stand...

    New Record Vise

Foreman05 - That's a nice vice! I've bought several jaw sets with screws included at Acklands-Grainger. I think in the US they are know simply as "Grainger". I'm not familiar with Irwin jaws but it wouldn't surprise me if they would work too. Maybe someone else can weigh in on this...

    Free parts washer

Good idea. It will also help to elevate it a bit. I built my parts washer back in the '80s. I set the floor of the basin at the same height as my work bench. I did that so it would be easier on my back. The one I used prior to that was lower and I found that bending over and moving parts...

Mig welding extra-thin sheet steel - quenching okay?

For some reason I feel like I'm "cheating" when I use that stuff but it really is a good way to go on a lot of things. I get the same way when I spot weld. lol I'm currently doing a resto-mod on an old fibreglass camper. After years of never doing fibreglass repairs on metal cars...

Mig welding extra-thin sheet steel - quenching okay?

^^^^ Good points. With a bit of experience, it's amazing how quickly you can go with hammer welding. The actual hammering and dollying is much easier when rod is not used. Basically you're shaping 2 soft sheets of metal. Introducing a 3rd and much harder material, the rod, makes the job...

    Parts cleaner solvent

Everything will find it's own place (level) in the reservoir based on it's weight and whether or not it will dissolve or mix with other liquids. Grease, for example should drop to the bottom. I believe oil sits between the water and the solvent. The solvent gets "murky" but it's basically...

Mig welding extra-thin sheet steel - quenching okay?

Hammer welding, O/A torch & no filler rod, is one way ... but MAN 24g is thin! It would work if it was 19g metal and you had access to both sides.

    Parts cleaner solvent

raddksn ... you're not suggesting I try beer instead are you? LOL Funny thing, beer would probably be a good parts washer filter too but I think we BOTH have a MUCH better use for that!

    Parts cleaner solvent

I'm fortunate in that I have a hazardous waste disposal depot that's just outside of town about 10 minutes away. I can honestly say though that I've taken very little parts cleaner solvent to it over the years. I think the key is to have a good filtration system in your parts cleaner. Mine...

    Show us your welding projects

Thanks. I built the stand, shown here prior to painting, around a basic spot welder and made it so I can easily remove it (6 bolts) so I can take it to something I'm working on if I want to. When it's on the stand and foot operated it's great to have an extra hand. The pedal is spring loaded...

I'm not sure but I think it would make it easier to find things that I drop!
