Thank you all - I appreciate the responses. One reason for my concern about milled vs coated was that Stabila themselves imply that this is a factor as they list the following in the 'product advantages' of their 70 and 80 series levels: "Coated measuring surfaces protect delicate surfaces."...

But which Stabila? The one that meets most of my criteria is the 196-2 but, crucially, that has a milled rather than a coated edge and I just don't know if it will mark fine finishes. Saying 'Stabila' is all well and good but, so far as I can tell, NONE of the Stabilas combine removable caps...
