Col Looks to me like a Millers Falls Oval Slide Vise. (Kinda of a sad oval, but what the heck). If you look through this and the Vise Info thread you will run into several old ads for this vise. That retaining nut could save some foot pain. JKB

Lugz I agree. Based on the patent below it is a Parker or a licensee. Look closely, there is s collar - a bit thin, but a collar. It is missing it's wrench-like "clamp screw" (Isn't it cool just to make up a name for something) JKB

One of mine was used as a drill press stand by the PO. He used a steel plate that was clamped to the top to preserve the butcher block top. To me, it looked like it served him well... JKB
