The muriatic acid is to make the concrete slab more porous, this way the epoxy can lock in better. I would NOT use it for removing old stains as you can do more harm than good. I use the Diedrich Aspir-Solv cleaner, its works great on oil stains and even takes up dried on bubble gum, LOL...

Water down your grass and asphalt before you use the acid, this will help reduce any of the damage from spillover. Also dilute the acid with water.
