For mounting the hood: Was watching "Garage Mahal" on DIY channel (no flames please!) and they did just what you suggest. They used a 2x6 cut down the middle length wise to form a "french cleat", with one half mounted to the hood and the other half mounted to the wall. Should be strong enough...
