I second the Ikea counter top idea. I was just there this morning. I plan on making a desk out of there counter top material. This butcher block material is over 1 inch thick. And, it's availble in birch, beech, or oak. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60057852 I don't think...
