Shop fan motor getting super hot

If you sort the reviews on the HF site by lowest rating you can see the bad ratings at top, (but that is the way it is for all products). I did look on Amazon, they have a 30" shop fan, ( K Tool International 77730, but it maxes out at 5,320 CFM). I don't know, but it seems the fan you have has...

Shop fan motor getting super hot

You might also let it run for a bit and see if the shaft spins freely, (that it is not binding up after it gets warm). It should be completely assembled because the mounting may provide some heat sinking effect. It is supposed to have a thermal fuse built into the circuit inside the motor in...

Shop fan motor getting super hot

Most of the heat is probably caused by the electrical and magnetic energy being used in the motor, unless there is a defect where some parts are rubbing that are not supposed too or are the bearings tight. With the fan off, does the fan turn easily by hand or is it binding or do the bearings...

    Ground path when checking voltage

Yes threeputt, since there were four of them, that is most the most likely explanation. Sounds like you had a productive day. 👍

Shop fan motor getting super hot

Probably should not run it without the fan as the moving air helps cool it .. but sounds like that model gets to warm to touch even with the fan. I don't know how hot is too hot for that motor.

    Ground path when checking voltage

I suspected that or that they were having an issue with a 20A breaker tripping frequently. The house I lived in when I was young, (built in late 1950s or early 1960s), did not have ground circuits, just 2 wire for the 120V stuff. I did not know this till recently, that three prong dryer...

    Ground path when checking voltage

(Adding to previous post): When I put a little drop of spit on the concrete it reliably gives a reading over 120V. I checked the resistance between the wet spot on the concrete and the ground connection on the outlet, it started out about 16K ohms and quickly rose to about 55k - 60k ohms. With...

    Ground path when checking voltage

The AC unit chassis is probably connected to ground. Is the metal AC duct continuous all the way back to the AC unit? I suspect your AC duct is connected to the metal chassis of the AC unit which is connected to a ground wire, .. apparently it is connected to ground enough for you meter to...

    Ratchet GREASE for round heads.

I just put a new 3/8 kit in a round head 1/4 SK 40970 with the grease that came with the kit. It is very smooth, very little backdrag. I did clean out the gunk that was in it and it is a new mechanism so it is not all the lube. I used to only lube my pear head ratchets when they started...

    Ratchet GREASE for round heads.

I bought a 3 oz tube of Super Lube from Amazon it is NLGI 2 grade, which is about the thickness of typical grease. In my humble opinion it probably is too thick for fine tooth ratchets, (I did put a little regular grease in my old 3/8 Craftsman V series and it seems good but have not used it...
