I have an early 30s ratchet set box with some serious crusty rust on the outside, which I would like to nip in the bud before it works its way through the box to the inside. Not sure trying to remove it is the right course of action, but I need to stop it. Too nice of a set to have holes in the...
The handle ends are peened on, not easily removable, but that is not a large handle, so easily straightened in a big vise or a press. Not sure what the other issue you are having is. I have worked on a few Samson vises now, early 30s' Rock Island.
Was going thru what Vanadium socket sets I have, and found this socket, which seems a bit of an oddball, as it would not have been IMO in the Vanadium box sets that I know of. Owner added I think. A 3/8" drive 21/32".
When date stamped (not all were),its on top of slide, those big numbers/digits that are visible are not the date. This model with cast logo will be from 1939 to early/mid '40s. This model returned after the war, but with heritage badge logo.
Here is a pic of a Craftsman 5198. Craftsman an Dunlap vises have carried common numbers on several models, as well well as on some Samson models I believe.
The only Dunlap 519x series vises were 1930s, and they really weren't in the catalogs. I have a 5195, 5196 and a 5197, no reason there would not have been a fourth 5198 in this series.
