Exactly the brass brush doesn't remove rust or tarnish as fast as a course steel wheel would, but it is harder to screw up your work piece. I debated the same thing when I bought mine. I cant really speak for the alternatives as I have a Dremel. I would however recommend whatever rotary tool...
