Another way to go -- I'm thinking of getting this -- would be an auto-closer. Google "garage door closer" for tons of options, like this. This won't just tell you your door is open; it will close it. Nice if you failed to close it when going to work, bed, etc.

I'm making something like these next month. The paper magazine has slightly different plans, which use pre-fab hanging closet doors, and seem easier to build.
