From my experience the triple square (XZN) has been on the CV shafts of the VW's I've worked on. I bought a Taiwan socket set of them and they seem to be holding up well. The VW also seems to like Allan Key & even more Torx bits as noted above.
On my 4x4’s I haven’t had many times my 300 ft/lb 18c Ryobi impact couldn’t handle the job. If the X4 is significantly cheaper I wouldn’t hesitate to buy that if I were you.
I have the M12 3/8 Ratchet, and the M12 3/8 Fuel Impact Wrench, both have saved me tremendous time on otherwise tedious automotive jobs. Of course the ratchet does not fit everywhere, but wherever I can get it to fit it saves time!
