Starting the garage plan, what should I include?

I have a 24ft * 24ft with 8 ft ceilings. If I was doing it again, I would definitely go for 10ft ceilings for the non-lift area. Other "lessons learnt" for me included the following: - - For the ceiling trusses, go for something that would let me put a reasonable amount of weight "upstairs"...

Dwell Meters, who still uses them?

Yes, I still have my dad's dwell meeting, as well as a timing light. Last time we used them together was a on a classic mini, but its at least 10 years ago now before he passed.

Adding garage size to my profile

Is anyone having problems with the "New Thread Prefixes!" pop-up? When I go into the "Garage Gallery" section, the pop-up appears but I cant get rid of it - the page below remains greyed out :-( As a result I can't access any of the threads.... Also tried accessing particular threads from my...

    20'x30' or 24'x25'?

Go bigger! I built a 24 by 24 two years ago. If I had had the room I would have gone 30 or 36 wide. As an aside the 24 deep allows for a workbench and still enough space at the front of the vehicle, but I would really like the extra width to get more wall space for cabinet storage and racking...

What do you personally use a speeder wrench for?

I use mine on 1960’s vintage cars for rocker covers and spark plugs. Gives more feel than a ratchet and quicker than a spanner (wrench)!

Engineers - Ideas To Replace These Trusses?

I am also an engineer and agree with LX Markham. At this stage, you need to talk to the truss company.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Removed the wheels from the trailer to get new tyres. The tread is good but lack of use and age means the sidewalls are now cracked. I will drop in to my usual tyre place on the way to work tomorrow to order new tyres and get them to remove the tyres so that I can take the wheels home tomorrow...

Does anyone use line wrenches that AREN'T Snap On?

Only a weekend warrior. No issues with Britool flare wrenches (old Britool, not the modern Expert stuff) that I inherited from my dad.

    Socket Questions

Try working on British made cars from the late 1970s They are a mixture of metric and imperial sizes. My dad usually remembered what was what but after he passed away 3.5 years ago, I didn’t feel that my hobby was much fun. Only just started up again and struggling at times...

    Point Loading Steel Beam Calc's

I did a similar calc for a garage here in the uk. Based on a 1 tonne (1000kg or 2240lb) load, using S275 steel, the most efficient section was a 152 x 152 x 23 UC (universal column) section for a 7m (just under 24 ft) span. Deflection was one of the criteria. The UC section is more compact than...

What did you do "TO" your garage today?

Technically nothing, other than provide moral support to the builder as he placed the newly delivered trusses on top of the garage walls to form the roof :-)

is it a WRENCH or a SPANNER

[Charles (in GA) states: "I found the English term of Stilson Wrench or Stilsons to denote a Pipe wrench to be odd. Indeed there is a Stilson Wrench, and indeed it is a pipe wrench, but it is a specific brand or design of pipe wrench, one that is a genuine Stilson, or made based on the Stilson...

Who here has never touched a Snap-on tool?

I'm a weekend warrior, so no never owned, used or touched a snap-on tool. My dad was a dealer service manager for a major UK construction equipment brand. His techs had mainly Snap-On, Mac, Teng, Facom and Sealey. He always thought that Snap-on was over-priced and over-rated - there were lots...
