It's a possibility, but it's pretty tricky to do smoothly on a gun much less, a large object

Be warned up front that this method is prone to warping. (issues of heat input) If you can heat the ends and welds to cherry red, you can (way outside the garage/house) spray automatic ****** fluid on them to blacken the steel. Then as it cools down you can throw a bit more beeswax on them...

Quite nice actually. While even the best project occasionally have a wart or two, they are mostly noticeable only by those who built it. Personally, I have made it a guideline must point out my mistakes as people are always happy to do that for me. If they don't see it it doesn't exist.
