Determining pier size for pole barn?

Now that I killed off almost all the willow, Locust is the majority of trees in our little woods. Make 7" by 11" timbers for my wife's landscaping steps, she loves it. They grow fast if they are tended to. I confess for my garage I did buy a 3500' scaled load of Hemlock for around a thousand...

Partial re-roofing of pole barn - any thoughts?

I will only use steel roofing from now on. I tried plastic panels a couple of times. They are ****, tear like paper, someone will have to make some real substantial fiberglass or plastic sheating before I will build them in agian.

Determining pier size for pole barn?

I shoot for at least 40" depth for frost defense in NY. With a block building I used steel for headers, lentils and center beam. Whole lot of money 10 years ago, scarier now. I use locust timbers on my projects now because they are free, can make any size I want.

I got some of that woven looking foam shelf liner at home depot or big lots or someplace. Spongysticky like surface.

    Compressor/electrical help

There's a chance someone has tapped into it for something else. I'd run a new line, quality single outlet receptacle and breaker. Haven't bought any conduit lately but shouldn't cost over 50 bucks for all the stuff

    Today's the day for lighting

Ditto, I have 6 in my 28x28' (inside measure), and it's like an operating room if I want. Careful consideration of the layout, 2 circuts 3 each, and they have pull switches added for conservation when needed. I got the plastic protector covers, bad move, had a lot of short bulb life I claim did...

    Attic storage?

My trusses are in 2' centers, probably not regulation but I made a stairs that went between a set after a year or so of using a ladder. Still wide enouth to get totes and smaller boxes up. I have french doors in the front that my wife likes to decorate, open up to 4' for yard furniture...

    roofing construction question (waterproofness)

You gotta grab it up, see what it is. The Ice guard that is from the generic home depot, joe lumberyard is rolled roofing with stickyback, still somewhat brittle. The stuff sold at a commercial outlet is in about 3 other grades of quality (or price to be specific). The **** my brother got was...

    roofing construction question (waterproofness)

Common practice now is to ice shield the whole thing in the snow belt. The old Victorian has to have shingles and iceguard sticky back stuff is under the whole thing, but tin is best in my opinion. My next home will have metal. The log house I built 25 years ago is metal and it's dirty, but it...

    Brick/block Garage

Block is the way to go, and once you have gotten the footer in the hardest part is done. Laying block is challenging at first and occasionally backing-up happens, but satisfying work. If tou are looking at doing about 20' square, I would try it myself. I had gravel ground but still put a...
