my electric furnace knowledge is limited,but that type usually heats one stage at time.When calling for heat the next stage comes in after a given run time.If thermostat is not satisfied third stage can be activated.Cool down is just the opposite.After warm up first stage is usually all that needed.

A new more efficent properly sized furnace will pay for it's self in fuel saved & improved comfort.A counter-flow unit mounted on a plenum at floor level makes installation easy & avoids that cold floor feeling.

If you lift the whole assy you can check the outside for rust etc before working on seperating the cylinder from casing.After removing the super structure, a couple of chokers around the cyl assy will allow you to lift unit with out spilling oil.Lay assy down slowly to catch oil from the cyl.
