Potentially switching careers to an electrician

I don't think you can go wrong with an IBEW Apprenticeship, but I am biased - 30 years IBEW, Lineman, Electrician, Substation Operator, over 40 years total in the trade, now retired. Go talk to your IBEW Local, they can steer you in the right direction.

Went to a brand-new Harbor Freight!

What smell? I never noticed a smell. Haven't been in HF in a long time, now, but the one I went to here in Sin City was relatively clean, well stocked, but a bit messy due to messy customers picking over stuff.

    Favorite or best tape measure?

Favorite, or the one I seem to reach for or have at hand most of the time, is a Stanley 25' x 1" Leverlock. Best? My Stanley Fat Max 30'; it is heavier, stiffer, just seems to be good quality.

    Montgomery Ward Powr Kraft tools

I bought a complete set of Power-Kraft mechanics tools in 1961 from the local Montgomery-Ward catalog store; don't remember how much they set me back, but it was an investment for a kid who was, at the time, an E-3 in the Navy. It was 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drive with ratchets, sockets...

    The Shed Show - Australia

    Cool. In my bookmarks, now.

Would their be any reason to have a 36 inch interior bedroom entrance?

I am another vote for 3-0 minimum doors, even if you don't have mobility issues; if you are planning on staying in the house long term, those issues may crop up in the future. Our house is small, and the doors are also smaller; I use a rolling walker, didn't when we bought the house, and it...

    Super vise

My comment, spoken out loud to just the dog and cat was, "holy ****". That is a big sucker.

Anyone have a suggestion on Biscuit Joiners

'Nuther one with an older Porter-Cable. Good machine, bought it in the late eighties or early nineties when we did a kitchen remodel - can't remember exactly.

    Air compressor piping question(s)

Somewhere in this forum is a thread about this same exact subject/question. In it, I did a comparison of copper vs. one of the aluminum kit systems, and found the the copper system, sourced from either Lowe's or Home depot was only slightly less expensive than the aluminum kit for the same exact...

What SIZE lineman pliers do you prefer?

This could be an argument like Snap-On vs. Matco, or Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge. In my experience, Channellock are as good as Klein in most cases. When bought my first Kleins back in 1959, it was as the suggestion of the guys I was going to work for, high voltage line constructors - "get...

    Where to install gymnastic rings?

We could give a better answer with a picture of the structure you are talking about. It sounds to me like what you are calling rafters are actually the collar ties that span the garage from top plate to top plate to keep the walls from bowing out or in, and they are not weight bearing members...

    Solid or stranded...which is best?

Maybe no difference, until someone has to try to sort out a problem and untangle the rats nest - pride of workmanship, attention to detail, ease of future maintenance. I see a panel that looks like a nest of snakes, I immediately start looking for extra problems. Do it right, do it once, and...

    H.K.Porter Type O Lineman's Bolt Cutter

Unless you are trying for a true to original restoration, I would just drill out the threads and replace the bolts with new high shear hardened ones, either tapped in or with nuts..

What is this tool used for?

It is a "crowsfoot" specifically for some sort of sending unit like an oil pressure sender; a regular "crowsfoot" would have flat faces and sharp corners, and five or nine flats.
