    Vintage Trailer Axle ID

You nailed it, thank you! Yes, 1779 (outer) and 2788 (inner) are the Timken numbers. Didn't need those, but I sure stumped the auto parts community in my town looking for the seal. CarQuest and Napa had no reference for the National seal number 440298, and tried to get close on measurement but...

    Vintage Trailer Axle ID

I agree. To confirm, I found that the centering hole on the wheels is bigger than any Chevy rim - 3.65 inches - which I can only find on trailer wheels. Yeah, you're right...I don't know why I was thinking they'd hold the races in when they come out the other way...duh. They are a cast ledge...

    Vintage Trailer Axle ID

Sounds like a possibility. It seems built for purpose...and overbuilt like things from days past. No doubt...I think I'm about out of clues on this end....see the inside of the hub with snap rings holding the bearing race in. Thankfully the Timken bearings and races are in good shape and don't...

Threaded, but internally unlike the Ford item.

    Vintage Trailer Axle ID

Sorry, may not have been clear...not questioning the bolt pattern...it's the screw-on octagonal dust/grease/hub cap that has me curious. I've seen quite a few trailers over the years, and never encountered that. I have only found (on the web) examples of similar caps on military/govt trailers...

True, I've used all those terms in my search...I default to hubcap since it's a cap on a hub. As opposed to a wheel cap, I suppose. :)

    Vintage Trailer Axle ID

I'm trying to learn something about this axle. When I search for "octagonal hub cap" or similar, I'm pointed to Ben Hur / military trailer axles, but haven't seen any like this with a standard Chevy 6-lug hub. I know the axle was on this shop-built welder trailer since about 1970, possible...

    Diamalloy Tools

I have a set of the 6" "groove joint" as well, plus these cutters which don't seem to be as common. Use them both all the time as they hang over my workbench.

    Auto darkening helmet question

Mine is similar, and lives in a box on my welding rig. Just a few minutes in full sun (as dadsEH suggested) brings it to quick switching and full darkening. If I don't set it out, I get the symptoms you described.

    Damn rain

Boy, it all depends on your perspective. I could probably poll my neighbors and collect enough $$$ to order a 30x40 garage, if we knew it would bring rain like you're describing.

    another lift question

You'll find members here that swear by each type - 2-post and 4-post. Personally, I don't want the balance issues or risks of a 2-post and plan to do most all of what you say with my 4-post. Yes, perhaps more expensive, but my choice. My first project will be to yank the factory bed off of my...

    another lift question

In my late teens I inherited a '62 Impala, and it's long gone but I am familiar with your problem. I just put in a BendPak 4-post lift and a single bridge jack, but several members here have also purchased a second bridge jack. I am fairly certain that with two bridge jacks, considering their...

    Homemade palm ratchet

I've had a "custom" palm ratchet for years, ever since I broke the handle off of my 3/8" flex-head. I also have the made-for-purpose Craftsman 3/8" version I got later as a gift...and I actually prefer the "custom" one for most situations (better leverage), but I do wish it had finer teeth...

    3 wire vs. 4 wire 220v

I'd like to thank you all for this quality banter - seriously. It has both corrected some of my misconceptions and broadened my understanding. Sure, classic spoofs such as the hanger wire boondoggle have their place, but so do legitimate information exchanges. Ok, my first tangent to the...

    3 wire vs. 4 wire 220v

Since it appears this this thread ran its course but contains the topic I'm curious about, I'll take a chance and hijack it. The above statement repeats something I've read in several other posts, but not seen explained - that a neutral-to-ground connection is a bad thing outside your main...
