The Prentiss 22 is showing a "12" stamp under the swivel jaw. Perhaps that's for a 1912 manufacturing date?

Thanks to all replying on the art and craft of swivel jaw removal. I was hoping to hear from you, Smitty, the Prentiss legend. All responses are appreciated. I'm very much taking this to heart: slow and steady. It's already moved 0.25" in one direction, so that's encouraging. I'm going to...

I'm confident in the setup for my purposes, but I'd never discourage an even beefier version. The four shelf brackets combined are rated for more than my entire vise collection weighs, and the 2x4 is fastened with big GRK structural screws. The max load I put on one shelf is typically less than...

While I'm working on that Prentiss 22, I'll take a moment to show my vise mounting system, in case it may be interesting to some. When I started acquiring and fixing up more vises than are strictly necessary for my little garage shop to function, I knew I wanted to keep them poised and ready...

Thank you for taking a hit that others may learn from, Charles! I was thinking "I hope I don't break this jaw" without a thought to my own self. I don't *think* the Prentiss has a similar pin, but I'll be looking closely to try to confirm this. Do you have pics of the American Scale swiveler...

Thank you, Outlaw, much appreciated. I'm going to try the ATF/Acetone mix. I'm also building a jig to hold the piece firmly, so I'm not losing so much energy to wobble.

Recently started a re-fresh on a Prentiss 22. The swivel jaw has moved maybe 4mm. That's about 1mm per 20 hammer blows, I estimate. Sharing this for general interest, but also, if anyone has undertaken this process and has a cautionary tale, I'm listening.

I have a damaged and incomplete 5198 to add to this. It's missing the base and the static jaw appears to have been welded back on. It sat on FB marketplace - with no indication of model or size - for a while in North Carolina, so I messaged the guy to tell him it was a 519x, and a pretty cool...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal- Craftsman 5198 This is joyful and heartbreaking at the same time. Another 5198 has surfaced - does that make something like ten known to the GJ community? But it is just this side of wreckage. Missing base, static jaw welded, chunk of the dynamic jaw gone. Later...

Re: Athol 623 I hear you on that - I had the same thought for about a second when I arrived. But he was totally cool. No hint of wanting to re-negotiate. I told him how it can be hard to sell a vise like that if you don't have a collector nearby, because of shipping costs. I think he was...

Athol 623 So I see a Facebook Marketplace ad offering a good looking Athol 623 for 40 bucks. I respond, and I'm somehow the first, and go to meet the guy an hour and a half away. He's there when I arrive, and immediately asks what's the deal with these vises? He knew I was driving 1.5 hours...

Shift: Now I'm wondering if the there are Keystones I, J, K out there! Collecting the alphabet just got harder. Thanks for posting - that L is a beast.

Thank you, Shift! That Keystone B is....adorable. If that word is allowable here. I may have a side goal of collecting the alphabet, as much as there is of it. The line appears to go from B to H, based on this catalog page I downloaded from somewhere on the internet, possibly this very thread.

I picked up this Hollands Keystone F a while back on Ebay, and recently finished getting the rust off of it, and some paint on. It's been mentioned that Hollands are well made, and this one is wonderful, despite what I suspect is advanced age. The jaws align nicely, and the action is smoooooth...
