I have two large vises that are not being used, I'd like to trade one or both for a nice USA made Wilton (Bullet?). The Sambre-et-Meuse is apparently an all-forged steel vise, made in France (or Belgium?), the Chas Parker is USA made and both are in decent condition. They're too large for my...
Heat and a quality penetrant (Kroil, Yield, etc.) would be where I'd go first. Secondly, I'd try vibration....not just tapping with a hammer, but consider something like an air chisel but without the sharp end that could cause damage. Just vibrate the bejibbers out of it, letting the penetrant...
Trying to reach member Rusty65 in Pekin IL, but no reply after nearly 3 weeks. Interested in a vise he has for sale. Anyone know him? I sent a PM through the GJ system, but as I said, no reply. In fact it appears that it hasn't been read.
Super thanks, any help is appreciated.

Finishing up my new garage and I have three large doors
one is 16 x 8, another is 10 x 10 and the third is 8 x 9. The
all have new side and top seals (light gray) but the outside
colors have now changed and we need to find sticks (not roll-up)
lengths for sealing the tops and sides for all...
Lot's of great information. At this time I think there are two viable options. #1 is to run the beam across the inside of the door, BUT at a steep angle downward from the man door end of the garage door. This will raise the IR light source to a point above the interfering man door swing. Not...
The problem is we’re expanding the old two car garage into
a 2k sqft shop and parking for antique and daily drivers. One
of the three new garage doors is located very near a front
corner of the garage, the corner turns 90 degrees and immediately
there’s an inward opening man-door with the...
Lot's of good information here. I thank everyone. My local garage door vendor came out yesterday but wasn't very encouraging nor willing to look at options. I'll be going into the
"big city" soon and have a visit with another vendor to see if he also has some suggestions. Thanks again.
I'm about to tear down my existing attached 2 car garage and replace with a 34' x 65' garage/shop with 600 sqft upstairs room for wife's crafts. My problem relates to minimizing the overall height (visual impact) of the building while still providing room inside the garage for car trailer...
Re: Rock Island broken lead screw. I've just added photos to my original posting (see posting No 193 above). Looking for replacement lead screw, just in case someone has a suitable broken vise with the needed lead screw and cast in place knob end on the lead screw.
Super thanks.
Steve
We could make the screw, the problem becomes mounting it securely into the front end where previously it appears to have been cast in place :D

I don't have access to the vise right now. It's at my friends shop. The broken piece is simple: It's the lead screw, the rotating part that moves the movable jaw. It's broken across the diameter and is in two pieces in the middle of the acme(?) thread.
Hope this helps.

Trying to put back together a Rock Island No 594. The lead screw is broken. Otherwise in excellent condition. It appears that the lead screw had a flattened end that was subsequently placed in the sand mold and molten steel was poured around this end to form the front or nose on the lead...
Actually from what little I've found, Sambre et Meuse Industries was a Belgium company, but I may have misunderstood or am talking about a different time period. I also found the following (looks like a french-speaking version of The Garage Journal, at least as it pertains to Vises)...
Another recent vise purchase: Just purchased this Sambre et Meuse 6" bench vise. Handles are a bit beat up, and there's been some beating on both appropriate and inappropriate areas, but it's tight and accurate closing of the jaws, acme thread is straight and it just looks good next to my Chas...
