Gotcha -- thanks! I agree on the size, maybe I should be clear when I say "workbench", it's more like "shelf to put things down". I'll move the lighting to the perimeter in my sketch as you suggest.
Replying to myself here, a friend pointed out that because the walls reflect light, the fixtures should be more centered in each bay. Looking at the layouts here, that seems to be right. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is right/wrong?
Correct, two cars is the intended use. There will never be much of a workbench there, though one car is very compact (Miata) so I do have a bit of room in the right bay (when viewed from the garage door).

I'm working on a garage remodel similar to the one in post #15 above. The garage (detached building) is 19'3" by 19'8" with ~8' ceilings. The one catch is it has a center beam which prevents all of the layouts suggested by Platonic Solid.
