Cool info and stories about rebuilding motors. Seems like the majority of items that used to be rebuilt/repaired by specialized tradesmen are now just replaced when they go bad. Higher costs of labor and much less emphasis on user-serviceability I guess?
After discovering the condition of the...
Do you have a spool gun for your Lincoln? And pure argon. Aluminum would be cool but obviously more expensive and a little more time consuming. Is it weight or corrosion resistance that makes aluminum more appealing? Steel square tubing, painted or powder coated might be a lot easier.
That's good advice but I installed the new motor already. Using the original until it quit would have been the smarter option but I didn't want to pull the compressor back apart if it did go bad in the near future. Figured I could list the old motor on Craigs and recoup $100.
Speedbump, they usually don't give me any trouble either if the bottle is relatively recent. Guess it's just because these were so far out of date.
Firebrick, they probably still make plenty of money charging people $170 to refill an acetylene bottle. I don't mind paying the hydro test fee on...
You're okay with a single mechanism that covers all the drawers right? Maybe a piece of flat bar that is hinged on one end and has a latch at the other? Like a rectangular slot in the flat bar and a little piece on the toolbox side that rotates 90 degrees once the bar is slid over it.
Or a...
Hey cnc-me, sorry I never responded. I stopped receiving notifications for this thread. The motor I purchased is a Baldor FDL3732M. One of the reasons I bought that one is because it has a 1-1/8'' shaft which is what my original motor had. The gen-purpose Baldor has a 1-3/8.
It showed up...
Yeah I've always heard 10 years for most gas bottles. I'm more concerned about it only being able to be re-certified once though. That would make a lot of bottles obsolete. Maybe he was mistaken? I once swapped out one of those old style acetylene bottles (with the shroud around the valve...
I wound up with an old oxygen and acetylene bottle a while ago. They haven't been used since the 80's or 90's. Thought it'd be nice to have a spare set so I went to swap them today and the first shop said I'd need to have them sent off for hydro-testing and I'd have to pay that fee up front. The...
I like their ratchets, wrenches and sockets. Pliers are nice too. The old plastic handle screw drivers are cool. I have a set of the newer screwdrivers and don't like them as much.
I like your Franken-compressor. Looks cool! Maybe I'm close enough to some farms that the farm duty motor would still work for me.
Appreciate your input. I'll get one ordered.
I have a Snap-On air compressor with a custom made Baldor motor. It's rated as 1700rpm/7hp but has similar current draw as a regular 7.5hp. It's a 184t frame. It got hot at some point and the string around the windings is coming undone, some plastic bits melted etc. It still works fine but I'm...
The parts availability is very questionable. I talked to a compressor parts supplier and he couldn't identify either unit.
I figure if the tank isn't rusted out on the second one, that alone must be worth to close to $300 so I'm going to take the gamble. I mostly use air for occasional...
Nice job on that compressor! Looks real nice. Cool history on the huge ones too. What's the idea behind the three separate air lines between the heads? Cooling?
The tank on that blue one says 1947 and it looks like the outside had some rust pitting before they painted it. Makes me worry about...
