Just flippin' amazing. In five and a half years this thread was open, there was only one intelligent answer. Thank you Motes. But plenty of folks had to chime in about how "unsafe" it would be without the sensors. As far as "Yet there are 100-200 incidents every year... ", this can be summed up...

I have a 1995 Liftmaster. It won't work properly without the sensors. How old is yours?
