    Furnace vs. Garage/Workshop heater

I have a 24x36 with a 14x36 loft space. I found a used 80% efficient NG furnace and installed it upstairs and ran duct work. It works awesome. I keep the garage at 40degrees all winter and crank it up when I'm out there. Fifteen or twenty minutes on the coldest North Dakota winter day and it's...

2 story garage vs garage w/room on first floor

Welcome to North Dakota. I built a 24x36 with room in the rafter trusses. It's on a floating slab with thickened edges. I didn't have the option of building out on my lot, and if I would ave gone bigger than I did the city would have required me to put in frost footings. When I pulled the...

    OUTDOOR GFI Receptacle

Heavy load shouldn't trip a correctly working GFCI.

room in attic or barn style trusses

I built my 24x36 with a room in the rafters. I was looking at the Menards trusses too, but my framer talked me in to using trusses from a supplier he used. They were better built than the Menards trusses with 2x10 floor joists instead of 2x8. I ended up with a 15x36 room with 8' ceiling and 4'...

running gas pipe to my garage

I went and talked to our gas company. They asked how big of a space, how far, ect. and recommended the size to install. They then made me a direct burial 1" line complete with risers and tracer wire. About $350 for 50'. Worked great.

OK, I'll give you that one.

    Thhn / thwn

Because the hot and switch leg are run in the same raceway or cable, the current flow is running in opposite directions and the magnetic fields will cancel the same as a hot and neutral conductor running together. EMF can be concentrated and controlled such as with an iron transformer core, but...

    Receptacle questions

Loop the screw terminals. The wires are criss crossed because of how they were originally installed, doesn't hurt anything.

    Questions for Minnesota electricians

I don't know the exact requirements in Minn., but next door in ND the state requires you to have 8000 hrs. experience as an apprentice and either trade school training or other approved formal training before you are allowed to take the state journeyman's test. I'm guessing Minn. has similar...

Sams Club Seville Classics Workbench - Pictures and review needed

I have the bench and the tool chest. Like others have said, definitely not for the professional mechanic. But for the occasional do it your self-er like me, I think they are very good for the price. Be prepared to spend a few hours putting the toolbox together as it comes in a thousand pieces...

    Grounded Sockets

I know it's always been standard practice for me to pigtail the equipment ground to the receptacle, self grounding or not. That's how I show the apprentices I want them made up too.

    Spade Terminals & AC

It will fit fine on your breaker without a fork terminal. Make a fresh strip on the end of your stranded wire so all the strands are nice and straight, back the screw out to give you max room on the terminal , make sure all strands go in straight and crank it down tight. Good to go.

    Photocell wiring question....

Not sure what could be causing that, but if the original installer pulled two wire cable to a photo cell who knows what else he did. Are there instructions with the new photo cell? Most of them will turn on briefly when first powered up until the sensor adjusts to the light.

Running multiple circuits through stud (50A and 20A, 6/2 and 12/2)

I believe you treat it like conductors in a raceway. More than three current carrying conductors, you have to start derating.

    Photocell wiring question....

It worked because he used the equipment ground as the neutral which is at the same potential as the neutral. Not code or right by any means though. I don't think it would cause premature failure of the photocells though. I'm not aware of any two wire photocells but maybe someone else will chime...
