Anyone with US-based experience and the RAL paint color system?

I work for a Formula 1 team — I’m based in the US, but most of our logistics stuff runs out of the UK. We spec a lot of stuff in RAL, which is what the paint shops we use in Europe prefer. If you can find a shop that uses a paint system — say PPG for example — that is also widely used in Europe...

    Just curious "SAE or "American"

Standard vs. metric here. I occasionally say SAE, never "American."

Best Way to Mask Stripe Paint?

I used frog tape and the "paint the edge of the tape" method on the "checkered flag" wall in my kid's racing-themed nursery: You can see a toolbox-style dresser in the foreground too...red paint and some aluminum angle drawer pulls (with all the corners rounded off).

    Picture Labels for Drawers

If you want them to be easily moved from drawer to drawer, buy some flat magnetic stock on a roll -- this is the stuff sign shops use to make magnetic signs for the doors of trucks, etc. You can put the photos onto the magnetic stock (maybe with spray adhesive or clear tape) and then cut them...

    Vintage (FREE) Proto Toolbox Score!

The badge actually pops off pretty easily, but I don't know if I'll mess with it anymore -- it would need to be stripped entirely and repainted, and then I'd just end up with a really nice badge on a really rough box :)

    Vintage (FREE) Proto Toolbox Score!

Put in some drawer liners today and did a little mini-restoration on the PROTO badge -- just took a rag with a little acetone and wiped off the paint on the letters and border...I don't mind it still looking a little "ratty" but it's an improvement. Stated throwing some stuff in the drawers too...

    Vintage (FREE) Proto Toolbox Score!

I just ran out to the garage -- thanks for the tip! Don't know how I missed it. MADE IN USA 06-78. Guess they used this design for quite awhile!

    Vintage (FREE) Proto Toolbox Score!

Haha nice eye...it's the engine cover from this crash: When Ana Beatriz was subbing for Mike Conway after his Indy crash. I work in the racing industry (and live in Speedway, IN), but I bought this at a sale at the Dreyer & Reinbold shop awhile back right before they moved to their new shop...

    Vintage (FREE) Proto Toolbox Score!

Saw this awhile back in the basement of the house a buddy of mine rents. I had him ask his landlord what he'd take for it, and the guy just said to load it up and get it out of there and it was mine. Finally made it over there in a vehicle with room for this thing today and brought it home...

    Oil Change Question

My BMW has a cartridge-style filter, and the new cartridge comes with a new crush washer for the drain plug, a new large o-ring for the filter housing lid, and a new washer and tiny o-ring for the long bolt that holds the filter housing lid on. I'd hate to have to buy all that **** from the...

    Vintage Indy Garage

Proto also used to make Indy 500-branded lead hammers used to hammer the wheel knockoffs on and off. You still see them on eBay sometimes. BTW this garage display is in the same building as my office...hence the username. Not a bad place to go to work everyday! :)

Quality of Work - The TV Shows

Bryan Fuller from Two Guys Garage is kinda goofy, but that dude has skills. Used to work for Chip Foose and showed up on Overhaulin' a lot. Stacey David is cool and knows his stuff, but man that guy laughs a lot. My girlfriend calls him "Giggles" and hates it when Gearz is on :) I'll watch...
