How much insulation do I really need?

I built a new woodworking shop in NE Wisconsin in 2018 and was planning 6-8 weeks of wintering in Florida so I skipped the under slab insulation and pex. Plans changed and now I'm on a cold floor. I did put heavy plastic under the concrete so the floor doesn't sweat like the old garage but its...

THE WALKER-TURNER THREAD - Post your Walker-Turner pics

Beautiful work Hoorn. I've recently came to possess a 14" WT bandsaw that appears to be your latest project's brother. Even has the black id tag 20-842. The good; it includes a non stripped out tensioner, non cracked trunnion, original clicking miter gauge and the functional gearbox, although I...

    Garage slab concrete install hacks

If I ever see the guy that did a perfect job on my slab he better watch out. I'll probably try and drown him with beer! How's that?

    Electric motors

Might be a long ride and not sure about consumer grade but Quality Electric in Milwaukee is top notch. Had them rebuild a pool pump motor that worked much better after they got at it. In my former non retired life I worked in a medium sized office bldg that had a service contract with an HVAC...

Did you build your own house?

Built two houses and assisted on several others. I'm not in any construction trade but I worked for a year after High School with a factory carpenter who had extensive boat building experience and he was a treasure trove of info. Loved that guy. First house just under 3000 sq ft started in June...

BendPak gone the way of the throw away culture!

From the MaxJax bankruptcy announcement... Q: Will I still be able to find parts several years down the road? A: BendPak Holdings LLC will stock and maintain all current Max Jax (models) replacement parts and accessories. BendPak typically stocks and maintains product replacement parts for a...

knotty pine tongue and groove source

If the OP has access to a nearby mill, I'd be all over that route. For my cottage ceiling, I picked up 1000 sq ft of 4, 5 and 6" T & G white cedar from a mill near Escanaba, MI for 1/2 what Menards charges for their red cedar product. Loaded straight off the pile and had zero unusable boards...

Considering floor heat for a new construction workshop

A few years ago, I built a 24 x 40 two story garage with the intention of an upstairs wood shop. However up and down 16 stairs dozens of times daily during construction quickly got real old (as did I) and the wood shop stayed on the first floor. My hanging heater works great to quickly bring...

    Land Survey

Did the 1979 survey put in corner marks, usually 1" or 2" pipe? I found my corners were marked years ago on the county GIS map so they were easily found with a metal detector.

Big Maxx Heater Fails to Light when Cycling

I do a fair amount of woodworking in my shop year round and even with efficient dust collection, my heater seems to be a magnet for wood dust. A few weeks ago I turned on the heat and had similar issues to the OP. A few squirts of compressed air and all is well again.

What can I use to smooth out the cinder block in my garage prior to paint?

Up in the north a common practice in basement block walls was to parge the block with mortar, then apply tar to any below grade surface. Don't see that done too much anymore as better solutions are available but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. I have about three courses of block exposed...

Tire balancer questions! including 1 phase to 3 phase

Just picked up an old 3 phase wood lathe that I'm running on 240V single phase with a Teco L510 VFD (about $150). There's a you tube guy named clough42 (that should've been a teacher) who explains the operation simple enough for anyone to understand.

    Garage Ceiling Material Options?

The ribs are under an inch. If you do the work, drywall will be less than half of what metal would cost and will weigh 5X as much.

    Used marine vinyl sewing machines

Good for you madmac. I sure wish I'd learn how to sew. I can't add anything on machinery but every upholsterer I know is up to their eyeballs in work. I'm waiting on four boat cushions since early June.
