I got my first job as a legit tech! (Need advice)

Congrats on the new job. Remember that the most used tool is between your ears. Keep in mind too that the hole between your nose and chin is for asking questions. If your head and mouth are in sync you will do just fine.

How to protect your tool box with high tech

Seems like a common problem no matter where ya go. I always wanted to hook up a buzzer to mine. Simple pressure switch that completes the circuit when open and a 9V battery should be a cheap and easy fix.

    draining water from compressor?

I leave the drain on mine open until I use it and then afterward make sure that it's empty again. I worked in a shop where the compressor was on a timer. It started about 2 hours before the shop opened and auto drained just before we started work. It drained again at lunch time and at the end...

What do I need a Dremel© tool for?

I find that a dremel type tool is great when a file is too much work and a saw would take off too much. I've used mine to take just enough off of a piece of ceramic tile as well. If you always have air available a die grinder is great but you can use a dremel any place that you have electrical...

    got broken into - padlocks?

Happened to me once, same thing, cops came, took them away, two hours later they were home. Charge was B&E, slap on the wrist while I had to do a security upgrade. A couple of days later I confronted one of the punks. In typical punk fashion, I got the usual answer, "what are you going to do...

And when I Die - tool disposal

My daughters and I have discussed this. They have both have expressed interest in keeping many of the tools that I have. Their husbands wouldn't have a need for a lot of tools since their interests aren't the same as mine. They're both great guys and would respect any agreement that I would...

    7/8" shaft but 1" pulley

bushings are available from Grainger and other suppliers but your best bet is to spring for a new pully since the bushings will either fit the shaft real well or the pully but usually not both. I worked in an electric motor shop and we always custom made our own but we had a machine shop.

Anyone had a rollaway tip over?

I made the mistake that so many have in opening too many drawers. Fortunately damage was repairable but left scars on the drawers. The applause that come from your co-workers is usually the worst part. I think that we've all had a box go over or seen some who has.

Anyone on the site into gun restoring

I've used everything at one time or another with real bad results and real good results. One of my favorites is a 50/50 mix of turpentine and Boiled linseed oil. The turpentine seems to drive the linseed oil into the wood and if rubbed right results in a satin finish. In my mind an older gun...

Who works with oxy acetylene at home?

Mine are in the garage and I work on bicycles once in a while. Everything is on a cart fastened with chains. I'm pretty conscious about the way I handle everything, I saw one propel across a motor pool once. In practice O/A is pretty safe, and fun if you don't have to do it for a living...

    Why can't I see what I'm welding?

I noticed the same thing and the ambient light did seem to make a difference. I ask why once and I was told told it had to do with the color temperature of the spark vs the lights in the shop. I could have been given a line of BS. In all honesty most of us wore tinted safety glasses also so...
