    Show your new tool arrivals

New to me from a local sale: The Plomb ratchet was completely locked up with grease the consistency of half-dried wood glue, but worked fine once cleaned up. Tried Phil Wood Tenacious Oil (bicycle brand) and it feels nice, we'll see if it gets messy. Facom wrench says "Vanachrome Scientific"...

    Tools of Japan

I really like mine, nice size and feels good in the hand. I trimmed the spring down to minimize backdrag to the point that finger pressure on the selector will make it freewheel. Very low backdrag now and easy to index to a fastener in tight spaces. I use it with a Koken 2756z 99% of the time...

Toyota uses a similar type for the big end of their steering rack boots. (Small end is typically a constant pressure spring clamp.)

    Tools of Japan

They are actually the default pliers I reach for most often unless I need a specialty tool. Dollar per use, this might be the best tool I have ever bought. Besides the examples Dave455 mentioned, I have also used them for releasing plastic electrical connectors, manipulating snap rings (both...

    Homemade Tools

Partially homemade tool? My Cornwell dealer gave me a discount on a 1/4" ratchet that had been sitting on the truck for a few years. I didn't take a photo before I started but it had a soft handle like this with a weird concave square profile where the guy's thumb is, that had to go. Pulled...

    Tools of Japan

Found this interesting tool of Japan at an estate sale I went past earlier. It's triple marked "Kowa" "Koken" and “HM" (Honda Motors). Kowa is the traditional supplier of Honda factory equipment and it looks like they contracted Koken for the production of this particular tool. Most likely it...

    Tools of Japan

Some newer Toyotas have a glass reinforced nylon cup that you unscrew to swap out a paper filter element inside. The tool is just a socket to turn that reusable housing. You can use a regular filter socket to turn the housing in a pinch but the proper tool has fingers that reach down and engage...

Tool makeup diversity in your box

I generally buy whatever quality tool I feel works best for the particular application with a "buy it for life" outlook. Most of the time that's ordering imported stuff but sometimes it's buying used/vintage stuff at yard sales or thrift stores, buying new off of tool trucks, or shopping...

Which version of Plomb / Proto wrenches have the best steel ??

There's also Penens and Challenger under the Plomb/Proto umbrella as well as the MAC knuckle saver line. If this is for collecting, I think pebble and LA are the coolest visually and from a historical perspective, but good luck finding any metric sizes. If this is for using, I think they are...

Split beam torque wrench - no clicky

Deflecting beam or dial type wrenches would also allow you to see as you approach a value.

Split beam torque wrench - no clicky

Lower values in the range often do not click as hard as a higher value but you should still be able to feel it in a smooth and slow movement. Just to confirm, you are holding the wrench at the round handle directly over the marked arrow and not touching anywhere else on the rectangular shaft...

Tiny box cutter for keychain that has a lock?

I like the materials and craftsmanship on that but I suspect it would have the same issue as OP's current knife (lock knob coming loose).

Tiny box cutter for keychain that has a lock?

Yeah, that's what my dad had for apples when we were little. To be clear, I wasn't recommending it on a keyring, but it can easily and discretely fit into any sort of pocket.

Tiny box cutter for keychain that has a lock?

There is stuff like the Olfa TK-4 (has a keychain hole but no lock): Or Slice Mini (has a slide "lock" on the heel and you could drill a keychain hole): But I wouldn't really trust a sliding mechanism like that in a pocket. They also have larger surface areas, which is good for grip, but...

Tiny box cutter for keychain that has a lock?

How do you leave your house? Even if I ride my bicycle, I still have a key for the lock. Teach me how to master this dark art
